Why Vermeer
Paintings by Susanne Husemann

The series Why Vermeer was created in a period of 12 years (2011 - 2023). Susanne Husemann sees her series as a pictorial dialogue with Vermeer's work. Inspired by Jan Vermeer’s domestic scenes from the 17th century. Husemann breathes new life into these classic deceptions by adding abstract touches and using unconventional materials such as cardboard and wood. By mastering the balance between abstract and concrete forms, Husemann's work serves as a compelling commentary on European art history. This series of images was awarded with various prizes and was sponsored by the Stiftung Kunstfond and the Goethe-Institut.
