eID card for EU/EEA nationals
General informationen
With the eID card, EU and EEA citizens can conduct administrative and business transactions digitally, just as is possible with the online ID function of the German identity card and the electronic residence permit.
Please note that the eID card with online identification function is intended for digital services only. It does not replace a recognized and valid foreign passport or identity card for identification purposes, for example, when traveling. Therefore, the eID card cannot under any circumstances be used as an official travel document.
Who can apply for an eID card?
Citizens of the European Union and members of the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) who are not German citizens and are at least 16 years old.
How do I apply for an eID card?
Applications for an eID card can only be submitted by appointment via the online appointment system or in person at the consulate.
Erforderliche Unterlagen
Documents must be submitted in ORIGINAL or as CERTIFIED COPIES, simple copies are NOT accepted.
Validity and fees
The eID card is valid for 10 years and is issued for a fee of 37.00 euros.
The validity period cannot be extended. You can apply for a new eID card before the expiration date. Proof of a legitimate interest is required.
