Lost or stolen passport
General Information
First of all, please check whether the passport/ID card could still be in the hotel/airport/bus or taxi/local. Passports/ID cards are often found again.
In Amsterdam, it is also possible to contact the Lost and Found Office. Lost documents are often handed over there. The office is open from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 16:00:00, and you can reach it at the following address:
‘Bureau Gevonden Voorwerpen’
Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 52
1017 RC Amsterdam
Telefon: +31 (0)20 251-0222
Further information can be found here.
In the Netherlands, everyone over the age of14 must be able to identify themselves with a valid identity document.
Based on our experience, it is usually sufficient to have a report of loss for a planned return journey by train.
If you intend to travel home by plane or a bus travel company, an identification document is usually required. We advise you to consult with your airline/railway company in the event of identity card loss whether it is possible to return to Germany by way of exception with the police report of loss. If you have a copy/scan of your ID document, you should also inform the airline.
What do I do if a passport is lost or stolen?
If passports, papers, cash or other valuables are stolen, contact the nearest police station immediately, report the loss or theft and obtain a copy of the loss or theft report.
Insurance companies generally require the police to report the damage if the damage is to be compensated.
Please have German debit/credit cards blocked using the phone number: 0049-30 4050 4050!
How do I receive a new travel document?
To return to Germany , you can be issued a passport substitute (RAP). This entitles the holder to return directly to Germany once and is valid for a maximum of one month.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are not flying directly to Germany but have a stopover in another country, you must inform the airline whether the trip is permitted with an emergency travel document.
If no, a temporary passport may be issued. To do this, an authorization by the passport authority at your place of residence (in Germany) is required, which may take a few days.
Proof of identity
If you can present certified photocopies of your lost identification documents or any other identification document, it is usually possible to issue the emergency travel document within a short period of time.
Without this copy, the responsible German passport authority must be contacted to verify the identity of the person. As feedback from Germany may take a few days, we strongly recommend that you make an appointment as soon as possible.
