First application for a passport for adults (18 years and older) and an identity card for persons aged 16 and over
General informationen
Who can apply for a German passport?
Only German citizens can apply for a German passport. If you do not know whether you are a German citizen, this must be clarified BEFORE a passport can be issued to you.
Information on German citizenship can be found here.
Is a declaration of name required?
Please note that the surname on a foreign birth certificate is not always recognized under German law.
Please check whether this is required BEFORE booking an appointment. Here you will find comprehensive information on name declarations and name changes.
Exceptions for naturalization and acquisition by declaration
If you have not changed your name since receiving your certificate, the following is sufficient proof of using the name:
- Your naturalization certificate or
- Your certificate of acquisition by declaration.
Required documents
Documents must be submitted in original or certified copies; simple copies are NOT acceptable.
The following documents are required for the application:
Please fill in the application form for adults or the application form for minors, print it out, sign it and bring with you to your appointment.
- 3,5 x 4,5 cm, biometrical according to our requirements.
- Not older than 6 months.
Please note that the biometric photos for Dutch passports are not suitable for German passports, as the biometrics have different dimensions regarding facial height.
Please inform the photographer of our different dimensions: image size 35 x 45 mm, face height for adults and children over 10 years of age no more than 36 mm and no less than 32 mm; for children aged 6 to 9 years of age no more than 36 mm and no less than 22 mm. The eyes must be in the marked area of the German passport photo template. For children up to the age of 5, no biometric suitability test is necessary. The only requirements that apply are image size 35 x 45 mm, frontal shot, eyes open, sharpness and contrast, lighting, background and photo quality. It is also important to ensure that no second person (e.g. parents and/or their hands) is visible in the background. Please do not have the photos edited.
The Consulate General has a photo booth in its waiting room, so you can also have your photos taken with us (not suitable for babies and small children under 120cm). The photo booth is operated by Vendig Concept and this company is the only one responsible for ensuring that the photos meet current requirements. The Consulate General cannot accept any liability for the quality of the photos.
We recommend bringing passport photos with you to the appointment.
The cost of the photo booth is €10. Please make sure you have the right amount (€10 and €5 notes, €2, €1, 50 cents are accepted).
